About This Trek
The Manaslu Circuit trek is a remote and less-travelled Himalayan journey that circles Mount Manaslu (8,163m — the world's eighth highest peak), offering a raw and authentic trekking experience. Starting from lower-altitude villages, the trail winds through lush valleys, suspension bridges, and traditional settlements deeply influenced by Tibetan culture.
As the trek progresses, the terrain becomes more rugged and alpine, with gradual acclimatisation stops in villages like Samagaon and Samdo. The highlight of the journey is crossing the high-altitude Larkya La Pass (5,160m), which provides breathtaking panoramic views of surrounding peaks and glaciers. The descent leads into the Annapurna region, completing a diverse circuit that blends cultural richness, challenging terrain, and stunning mountain scenery.
If you've done EBC or the Annapurna Circuit and want something more raw, more remote, and more culturally immersive — this is the trek.
Why Trek This With Karan
The Manaslu Circuit is a restricted trekking area that requires a special permit and an experienced leader who knows the route. The remoteness is part of the appeal — but it also means you need to be prepared properly, with someone who takes altitude and logistics seriously.
There are far fewer teahouses, far fewer other trekking groups, and far more self-reliance required than on the Everest or Annapurna trails. This is where experience and preparation genuinely matter.
Who Is This For
- Experienced trekkers who have completed at least one Nepal or high-altitude trek previously
- People who want authenticity and remoteness over comfort and crowds
- Those with high-altitude experience above 4,000m
- Groups of 4–8 who want a genuinely off-the-beaten-path Nepal circuit
Day-by-Day Itinerary
Long scenic drive from Kathmandu through terraced valleys and river gorges to Soti Khola — the trailhead for the Manaslu Circuit. ~8 hrs drive.
Trek through forest, riversides, and small villages. The Budhi Gandaki river is your constant companion. Walk: ~5 hrs.
Gradual ascent through narrow trails and traditional settlements. The valley narrows and the river becomes more dramatic. Walk: ~6 hrs.
Enter the restricted Manaslu Conservation Area. Trail passes through forest and villages — Tibetan cultural influence begins to show in architecture, prayer flags, and chortens. Walk: ~5 hrs.
Altitude gain is more pronounced now. Wide mountain views open up, with the first glimpses of high Himalayan peaks. The villages become more Tibetan in character. Walk: ~5–6 hrs.
Entry into high alpine terrain with Manaslu's massive bulk coming into full view. Samagaon is a traditional Tibetan village with a gompa — a significant cultural and acclimatisation stop. Walk: ~5 hrs.
Optional hike to Manaslu Base Camp (4,480m) or Birendra Lake for altitude exposure and outstanding views of Manaslu and Ngadi Chuli. Essential rest and preparation for the high pass ahead.
Short but significant trek to Samdo — a remote high-altitude settlement near the Tibetan border. The landscape is open and glaciated; the air noticeably thinner. Walk: ~3 hrs.
Gradual ascent to the base camp below Larkya La — a stark, high-altitude campsite or basic teahouse. Early night; early start tomorrow. Walk: ~3–4 hrs.
The summit day. Pre-dawn start across glacier and snow to cross Larkya La (5,160m) — panoramic views of Manaslu, Himlung, Cheo Himal, and other peaks. Long descent to Bimthang through changing terrain. One of the great high-pass crossings in Nepal. Walk: ~10 hrs.
Descend through forests back into the Annapurna region — the vegetation returns rapidly as you lose altitude. Dharapani connects to the Annapurna Circuit route. Walk: ~7 hrs.
Drive from Dharapani back to Kathmandu. End of trek. ~8 hrs drive.
