About This Trek

The Gaumukh Tapovan trek is one of the most spiritually significant and visually dramatic high-altitude journeys in the Garhwal Himalayas. It follows the Bhagirathi river from Gangotri — the sacred headwaters of the Ganga — up to Gaumukh, the glacier snout at 3,892m, and then continues over moraine and glacier to reach Tapovan, the high alpine meadow at 4,463m with direct views of Shivling (6,543m) and the Bhagirathi peaks.

This is a trek that Karan has led multiple times (47 batches across his India Hikes years included routes in this region). The combination of Himalayan scale, glacial terrain, and a campsite that sits beneath Shivling's sheer face makes Tapovan one of the most extraordinary places reachable on foot in India.

The route passes through restricted forest terrain and requires careful acclimatisation. The glacier crossing to Tapovan is challenging — proper footwear, fitness, and a competent leader are non-negotiable.

Who Is This For

  • Trekkers with prior experience above 3,500m
  • Those comfortable with long trekking days and basic glacier terrain
  • Anyone seeking a significant, spiritually and visually powerful Himalayan journey
  • Groups of 4–10 looking for something beyond the standard trail

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1 Dehradun to Gangotri 3,048m
Drive through Uttarkashi and the Harsil valley to Gangotri — a sacred Himalayan town on the banks of the Bhagirathi. A long but beautiful drive through some of Uttarakhand's finest mountain scenery. ~10 hrs drive from Dehradun.
Day 2 Acclimatisation in Gangotri 3,048m
Short walks around the Gangotri temple and nearby trails for acclimatisation. The altitude, the Bhagirathi river, and the surrounding peaks make this a memorable rest day even before the trek begins. Permits arranged here.
Day 3 Gangotri to Chirbasa 3,600m
Trek along the Bhagirathi river through pine and birch forests — the trail follows the riverbank with the river roaring alongside. Chirbasa (meaning "pine forest") is a campsite with the first real views of the glacier ahead. Walk: ~5 hrs.
Day 4 Chirbasa to Bhojbasa 3,775m
Gradual ascent through increasingly sparse vegetation — the treeline is left behind as the landscape opens into wide glaciated valleys. Bhojbasa is an open campsite with direct views of the Bhagirathi peaks. Walk: ~4 hrs.
Day 5 Bhojbasa to Tapovan via Gaumukh 4,463m
The defining day. Trek to Gaumukh (3,892m) — the glacier snout of the Gangotri glacier, the physical source of the Ganga. Then continue over moraine, boulder fields, and glacier terrain to Tapovan — the high meadow with Shivling's dramatic north face directly overhead. Walk: ~6 hrs.
Day 6 Tapovan to Bhojbasa 3,775m
One more sunrise at Tapovan with Shivling lit by early morning light — then descend from the high meadows back across the glacier to Bhojbasa. Walk: ~5 hrs.
Day 7 Bhojbasa to Gangotri 3,048m
Long descent following the same trail back — the forest returns, the river grows louder. Gangotri feels different after five days above it. Overnight at Gangotri. Walk: ~7 hrs.
Day 8 Gangotri to Dehradun
Drive back to Dehradun through Uttarkashi and Mussoorie. Trek ends. ~10 hrs drive.
